Free templates can be found online at many sites. The three most common formats are the traditional tree shape, the chart format and the more unique fan shape. Personally, I like the fan shape because it is not seen nearly so much as the traditional tree shape.
Some people opt to go for the simplest kind of family trees, which is just nodes, not a tree that denotes names and years. These simple diagrammatic trees can be a great way to introduce kids to genealogy and an understanding of their own family history because they are simple and easy to understand.
Maybe your heart is into creating a family tree but, the task might be overwhelming for you. Perhaps the family trees you have looked at in the past are so complicated you have not even been able to follow them. If you stick to a template, creating a family tree is simple.

Beginning with you, it works up to your parents, adds in your siblings, then goes up to your grandparents, then out to your aunts, uncles, cousins, and as many names as that particular worksheet will hold. These sheets are usually fairly extensive, so they will probably use up all the names you can remember before you managed to fill in every square. However, if you need more space, you may not even need a worksheet to continue.
There is a lot more to genealogy then just finding out who your ancestors are, you must then get them into a logical order to have the whole thing make sense. Using a sample family tree as a model is a good idea. If you do a little research you will find internet sites that will give you options and ideas to personalized your own tree once you have obtained the information. This will illustrate where to place individuals names and how to arrange your ancestry line as far back as you can trace.
