The Bow-tie Chart This example of a family tree outline shows both paternal and maternal ancestry on opposite sides of the bow. At the center of the bow are two squares placed side by side. In one you put your name, and in the other you put your spouse`s name. Next to your name you place two vertical squares, one above the other with a gap between. Put your father`s name in the top square and your mother`s name in the bottom square.
The Pedigree Chart This is the most common type of family tree template chart in use. You use it to record the information for a single person. Lets say you want to chart your family history, you start with your name at the bottom (in position 1 on the chart). Then you add your mother`s information on one side and your father`s information on the other side.
Whatever unique design you come up with, make sure that you make it available for the rest of your family to enjoy! You might display it in your home. You might decide to store a copy of it online so that a larger group of people from your family can get to see it. If you do this you may well find that you meet relatives you did not know about by the simple act of sharing your family tree online.

Types of Family Tree Template Charts There are 2 basic types of charts used to record family genealogy. I. Ascendant Charts II. Descendant Charts
One of the oldest family trees is that of Jesus Christ, which traced his genealogy back to Jesse, as it was depicted in a stained glass window in Frances Chartres Cathedral, dating back to 1145. Among the first nonbiblical family trees to trace the entirety of family relationships, as compared to those constructed from strictly patriarchal lines, was the Genealogy of the Gods of the Gentiles, or Genealogia deorum gentilium, done by Boccaccio and dating back to 1360.
